The Republic of Poetry

In the republic of poetry,
a train full of poets
rolls south in the rain
as plum trees rock
and horses kick the air,
and village bands
parade down the aisle
with trumpets, with bowler hats,
followed by the president
of the republic,
shaking every hand.

In the republic of poetry,
monks print verses about the night
on boxes of monastery chocolate,
kitchens in restaurants
use odes for recipes
from eel to artichoke,
and poets eat for free.

In the republic of poetry,
poets read to the baboons
at the zoo, and all the primates,
poets and baboons alike, scream for joy.

In the republic of poetry,
poets rent a helicopter
to bombard the national palace
with poems on bookmarks,
and everyone in the courtyard
rushes to grab a poem
fluttering from the sky,
blinded by weeping.

In the republic of poetry,
the guard at the airport
will not allow you to leave the country
until you declaim a poem for her
and she says Ah! Beautiful.

Mustafa Kemals Will Never End

Of course the stars in the sky,
The sand in the sea will fade away
This country, this land is generous.
I am a sacred flame that will never die
Believe me, Mustafa Kemals will never end.

Of course I was flesh and blood,
Of course I would die one day.
Know that there are two Mustafa Kemals.
I am the second, in the infinite
Invisible like a spirit.
Believe me, Mustafa Kemals will never end.

On the road to brotherhood and plenty
In the light of the creativity of knowledge
I am in the finest thoughts
In new, universal discoveries
I have done away with backwardness, it will not come back
Believe me, Mustafa Kemals will never end.

If you have woes, remember me
Feel me in your worst moments
Let not this country weep
In November,
The Conquerors, the Magnificents never die.
Believe me, Mustafa Kemal will never end.

Pull down all statues of mine

People of mine
This is me — Mustafa Kemal Atatürk…

If my teachings have fallen behind the age,
If learning is not now the truest mentor,
Let go dry my palate, my tongue;
I ask for your forgiveness:
Forget all that I have said onto you,
And pull down all statues of mine you once put up
If freedom

Is now
Not of the highest value for you…
If you rather be and remain serfs in shackles…
Forget all that I have said onto you,
And pull down all statues of mine you once put up
If modern civilization mean not a thing to you,

If it is your desire to turn the clock back to the Medieval,
If you crown the man
Who spits at and spites the arts:
Forget all that I have said onto you,
And pull down all statues of mine you once put up

As if wars and violence had not been woes enough,

As if Peace at Home and Peace Abroad

Were meaningless now;
Go keep apace with armament as if you were rewarded
And forget all that I have said onto you,
And pull down all statues of mine you once put up
If you have missed the fez, missed the veil of face,

If you would rather have the dark night than daylight,
If you still have hopes for miracles
From the shikh, the sheikh, and the dervish;
If healing comes
From amulet, from healer the charlatan,
Then forget all that I have said onto you,
And pull down all statues of mine you once put up
If what your desire is men and women be not equals…

If — fearing the monomaniac bigot’s wrath –
You bow to women’s confinement in the burqa black…
If you give your consent to
Wives and daughters going uneducated,
Thinking it to be their fate…

Forget all that I have said onto you,
And pull down all statues of mine you once put up
If freedom, if the Republic is too much for you…

If you are missing
The Sultanate, the Sultan…
If you still have not grasped the import, the signification
Of being a Nation…
Be subjects, remain a congregation,
Wait for fatwas from the shaikh al-islam…

Forget then all that I have said onto you,
Pull down all statues of mine you once put up
And leave me be…”
