Garlic is a type of bulbous plant that belongs to the family of lilies. This plant originates from central Asia. Cultivation of garlic started 4000 years ago. There are more than 300 varieties of garlic today that are cultivated usually in temperate and cold climates. People cultivate garlic mainly as a source of food. Other than that, garlic has application in medical and pharmaceutical industry, gardening (chemicals from the garlic repel pests) and in the industry of adhesives and food preservatives.

Gherkin, (Cucumis anguria), also called bur gherkin or West Indian gherkin, annual trailing vine of the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae), grown for its edible fruit. The plant is likely native to southern Africa and is grown in warm climates around the world. Gherkin fruits are served raw, cooked, or pickled, though the “gherkins” sold in commercial pickle mixtures are usually small, immature fruits of the common cucumber (C. sativus).

Ginger is a knobby, multiple branched rhizome found in many different shapes and sizes. The skin ranges in color from light to dark tan, depending on the variety, and is semi-rough with occasional callouses and rings ridged along the surface. Ginseng is flowering plant that belongs to the ginseng family. There are 11 species of ginseng that originate from eastern Asia and North America. Ginseng grows on the slightly acidic soil, in the shadow of tall trees (it prefers moist forests). Ginseng is part of traditional Chinese medicine at least 5.000 years. Asian and American ginseng are two best known and most commonly cultivated types of ginseng today. More than 80.000 tons of ginseng are harvested each year for the manufacture of herbal remedies that are available around the world. China, Korea, Canada and USA are the greatest manufacturers of ginseng in the world. Number of American ginseng in the wild is drastically reduced due to uncontrolled harvest of this plant.

Gooseberry is deciduous shrub that belongs to the currant family. It originates from Europe, northwestern Africa and southeast Asia. Gooseberry can be found in temperate areas of North America and Siberia also. It prefers areas with cold, freezing winters and humid summers. Wild gooseberry grows in the alpine thicket, rocky areas, woodlands and hedgerows. It prefers fertile, loamy soils and areas that provide enough sun (it also thrives in the partial shade). People cultivate gooseberry as a source of food.

There are 60 species and around 8000 varieties of grapes that can be found throughout the world today. Cultivation of grapes started 8000 years ago. Grapes are important part of human diet. This fruit has high nutritional value and numerous beneficial effects on the human health. Besides in human diet, grapes are used in cosmetic industry and in the medical purposes.

Grapefruit are medium to large in size, averaging 10-15 centimeters in diameter, and are round to oblate in shape. The peel is smooth, firm, and semi-glossy with many prominent lenticels, and has a yellow-orange hue with a pink blush. Underneath the peel, there is a bitter, white layer with a dry, spongy consistency connected to the flesh, and the flesh is divided into 11-14 segments by thin membranes. The dark red flesh is soft, aqueous, and contains a few to many cream-colored seeds. Grapefruits are tender and juicy with a sweet-tart, mildly acidic flavor.

Green bean is herbaceous plant that belongs to legume family (Fabiaceae). It originates from Peru, but it can be found around the world today. People cultivate and eat green beans at least 7000 years. There are more than 130 varieties of green bean that differ in taste and in the color and size of pods. Green beans require direct sun, well drained soil and 21 to 27 degrees of Celsius for successful growth. This is the third most popular garden plant (after tomato and peppers). Unfortunately, it is often on a target of insects (which destroy leaves and pods) and it is prone to bacterial and viral diseases which decrease productivity of the plant.

Guava is tropical fruit that belongs to the myrtle family. Exact origin of guava is unknown. Researchers believe that it originates from Central America and Mexico. There are around 150 species of guava that can be found in tropical and sub-tropical areas around the world. Strawberry guava and apple guava are invasive species of guava. They easily conquer new habitats and eliminate native species of plants. Several species of guava are endangered, and Jamaican guava is already extinct, due to habitat loss. People cultivate guava as a source of food (fruit) and in decorative purposes.
