RABBIT – TAVŞAN
Rabbits are mammals which belong to the ‘Lagomorph’ order that also includes hares and pikas. Rabbits are similar to rodents in that they have incisor teeth that continually grow. Rabbits form the Family ‘Leporidae’ in which there are over 50 species. The rabbit species which is commonly kept as a pet is called a ‘Oryctolagus cuniculus’ and within this species various breeds have been developed by enhancing different characteristics through selective breeding.
RACCOON – RAKUN
Raccoons have a body length of around 41 – 71 centimetres (16.1 – 28.0 inches) and weigh between 3.9 and 9.0 kilograms (8.6 – 19.8 pounds). Usually, male raccoons are 15% to 20% heavier than females. Raccoons can weigh twice as much in winter than in spring due to fat storage. Their shoulder height is between 22.8 and 30.4 centimetres (9.0 – 12.0 inches). Raccoons have a bushy tail which can measure between 19.2 and 40.5 centimetres (7.6 – 15.9 inches) in length.
RAT – SIÇAN
Rats are known for the damage they cause by chewing on materials, urinating on food and eating stored foods. They have also been known to chew on wires, which can cause fires to start. They also carry disease and ectoparasites. Rats will also attack both animals and humans. Human babies and even adults have been killed in rat attacks.
RATTLESNAKE – ÇINGIRAKLI YILAN
Rattlesnakes have either a rattle or a partial rattle made of interlocking rings of keratin (the same material our fingernails are made of). When vibrated, the rattles create a rattling sound that warns off large hoofed animals or predators. Another unique characteristic is the ‘pit’ on each side of the head, a heat-sensitive organ for locating prey. Each time a Rattlesnake sheds its skin, a new rattle segment is added. Since Rattlesnakes may shed their skins several times a year depending on food supply and growth rates and since the rattle can and does break, there is little truth to the claim that one can tell a rattlesnakes age from the number of beads in its rattle.
RAVEN – KUZGUN
Ravens are actually rather remarkable animals. These sleek, black birds are excellent and acrobatic fliers on par with falcons and hawks. Such aerial skills are on display during breeding season, when exciting mating rituals include an elaborate dance of chases, dives, and rolls. Common ravens typically vocalize with a croaking sound, but they boast a wider repertoire of calls.
RED DEER – KIZIL GEYİK
The Red Deer feature a gorgeous coat that is any shade of red. They often have a darker color to them that can almost seem brown in many regions. As the year moves along though and winter sets in the coloring will be more of a gray. This is why some people often mistake them for other species of deer in the winter months. Their appearance changes in order to give them a chance to blend into their surroundings all year long.
REINDEER – REN GEYİĞİ
The Caribou also know as Reindeer in Europe seem to appeal to people of all ages due to the legacy and connection they have to the holiday season. This is also why they are often a huge attraction at zoos around the world. They can be very large animals as adults with the males ranging from 350 to 700 pounds. For the females the size is from 180 to 260 pounds. The overall size will really depend on the type of areas where they live and their food sources.
RHINO – GERGEDAN
Rhinoceroses are large, thick skinned animals that can grow to be between 3 and a half feet to 6 and half feet tall at the shoulder and they can weigh between 1 – 2 tons. A rhinos skin is around 1.5 – 5 centimetres thick and is formed from layers of collagen (the main protein of connective tissue in animals and the most abundant protein in mammals), positioned in a lattice structure. Rhinos have relatively small brains for mammals this size. A rhinos brain only weighs around 400 – 600 grams.
ROBIN – NARBÜLBÜLÜ
The robin is, without doubt, one of our favourite garden birds. It seems to trust us, staying close when we’re in the garden and even taking food from our hands. Robins eat a wide variety of food, including worms, seeds, nuts, suet, invertebrates and fruit. They’ll readily come to garden bird tables, especially in winter, and a combination of suet, mealworms and seeds will go down particularly well.
ROOSTER – HOROZ
An adult male chicken is called a “rooster” and an adult female is called a “hen.” Roosters are larger, usually more brightly colored, and have larger combs on top of their heads compared to hens. Chickens can fly but because they are heavy, they can only go about 60 meters (200 ft). They have bad senses of smell and taste, but good hearing. They scratch and claw at the ground, looking for food. Baby chicks can eat and walk without help soon after hatching but they still need help keeping warm. Hens lay up to 240 eggs in a year. Roosters have been on farms, crowing loudly, for about 5000 years!
