Thailand

Officially the Kingdom of Thailand, and formerly known as Siam, Thailand is located in Southeast Asia in the center of the Indochina peninsula. Evidence shows that Thailand has been inhabited by humans as far back as 40,000 years ago. Since the mid-1300s, Thailand has been a unified kingdom. It wasn’t until 1939 however that it was officially declared the Kingdom of Thailand. Thailand is the only Asian country to never have been colonized by Europeans. Today Thailand is a constitutional monarchy with approximately 67 million citizens. It is also the 20th most populated country in the world.

  • In the Thai language, Thailand’s name is Prathet Thai. This means land of the free.
  • In history, Thailand has been known as Sukhothai, Thonburi, Ayutthaya and Siam.
    The capital of Thailand is Bangkok, and with approximately 16 million international tourists each year, it is the world’s most visited city.
  • Thailand is considered to be the world’s 13th friendliest country.
  • Thailand’s coastline is 3,219km.
  • Thailand borders four countries including Cambodia, Malaysia, Laos and Myanmar.
  • Thailand is almost as large as Spain, and is the 50th largest country in the world.
  • Thailand is home to the world’s smallest mammal. It is a bat that weighs only two grams and is known as a hog-nosed bat, or a bumble bat.
  • The main religion in Thailand is Buddhism. It is believed that approximately 95% of Thailand’s citizens are Buddhist.
  • During Monkey Buffet, an annual festival, more than 600 monkeys feast on tons of food in front of the Pra Prang Sam Yot Temple located in the Lopburi province.
  • The Great Buddha of Thailand is the ninth tallest statue in the world.
  • The Baiyoke Tower II in Bangkok is Thailand’s tallest building.
  • Thailand’s national sport is Muay Thai boxing. In this sport athletes use their knees, and elbows, punches and kicks to win. Muay Thai is ‘the art of eight limbs’.

  • The world’s longest head of hair belongs to the medicine man Hoo Sateow in Thailand. His hair is 16′ 11″ long.
  • The most expensive pet wedding was held in Thailand. It cost over $16,000 and involved the marriage of two rare diamond-eyed cats.
  • In the last century, 3/4 of Thailand’s forests have been lost to logging, but today logging is now banned in the country.
  • In Thailand families include large extended families that live together and support each other.
  • Thai food is popular around the world. Thai cuisine incorporates all tastes including sweet, sour, bitter, spicy, salty, and umami.
