Game Overview
Taboo is a lively and fast-paced word game played in teams. It requires quick thinking, creativity, and teamwork. The game includes a deck of 504 clue cards, a buzzer that runs on two AA batteries, and a timer. Each card has a main word that the Clue-giver must describe to their teammates without using a list of forbidden “taboo” words.
Setting Up the Game
To begin, players are divided into two groups of at least three members each, forming Team A and Team B. The deck of cards is placed into the card holder, and the buzzer is kept in the center of the table. Team A selects the first Clue-giver, who sits opposite their own team. The Clue-giver draws the top card and holds it so their teammates cannot see it, but at least one member of the opposing team can. This opponent is responsible for holding the buzzer and ensuring the Clue-giver avoids using forbidden words. Once the card is drawn, the Clue-giver starts the timer and the round begins.
Giving Clues
The Clue-giver must make their team guess the main word at the top of the card by giving verbal hints. Clues can be single words, descriptive phrases, or full sentences. However, the Clue-giver cannot use any of the taboo words listed on the card, nor any part of those words. For example, if the taboo word is “birthday,” the words “birth” or “day” cannot be used. Similarly, if the taboo word is “read,” the words “reading” or “reader” are also forbidden. If a taboo word slips out, the opposing team immediately presses the buzzer, and the card is discarded.
Scoring During Play
Each time the team guesses the correct word, the card is placed into a scoring pile, representing one point for that team. If the Clue-giver either says a forbidden word or decides to pass on a card, that card is placed in the discard pile, which gives one point to the opposing team. Incorrect guesses themselves do not carry a penalty, but they waste valuable time on the clock. The Clue-giver must move quickly, passing to the next card as soon as a word is guessed correctly or discarded.
Ending the Round
Play continues until the timer runs out. The final card that was in play when time expired does not count for either team, regardless of whether it was guessed correctly or not. At the end of the round, the score is tallied: each card in the Clue-giver’s scoring pile equals one point for their team, and each card in the discard pile equals one point for the opponents. After scoring, the role of Clue-giver passes to the other team, and a new round begins.
Winning the Game
The game continues until both teams have had an equal number of turns. Once all rounds are completed, the points are compared. The team with the highest score is declared the winner of Taboo.
