GAZELLE – CEYLAN
Gazelles are thin, graceful antelopes that live in Africa and Asia. They resemble deer and are in the same family as goats, cattle and sheep. Gazelles can be identified by their curved, ringed horns, tan or reddish-brown coats and white rumps. Often, there are spots or stripes on their coats. Their light frames help make them agile and better able to escape from predators.
GECKO – GEKO
Gecko is a type of lizard from the family Gekkonidae. There are 1000 species of geckos that can be found all over the world, except on the Antarctica. Different species of geckos have developed different adaptations to survive in wide variety of ecosystems, such as: tropical rainforests, deserts, jungles, grasslands and mountains. Geckos are often kept as pets. Leopard gecko is the most popular gecko pet. Certain gecko species are endangered due to habitat loss and because of the introduction of new predatory species into their environment.
GIBBON – JİBON MAYMUNU
Gibbon is a small ape. Its closest relatives are gorilla, chimpanzee, orangutan and bonobo. There are 15 species of gibbons that can be found in Southeast Asia (China, India, Burma, Malayan peninsula, Borneo…). Gibbon lives in dense jungles and tropical rainforests. Number of gibbons in the wild is very low because of the accelerated deforestation and poaching. Gibbons are often sold as pets. Also, their body parts are used in traditional Asian medicine. All except one species of gibbons are endangered or critically endangered.
GIRAFFE – ZÜRAFA
Giraffes are one of the landmarks of Africa. They are divided in 9 subspecies according to the area of Africa where they could be found and by the coloration of their bodies. Giraffes are tallest mammals on Earth and they live in savannas, sahel and open woodland areas.
GOAT – KEÇİ
Goat is a type of ruminant that belongs to the family Bovidae. It is a descendant of a wild goat (probably Bezoar ibex), native to southwest Asia and eastern Europe. Goats are used as a source of meat, milk and skin at least 9.000 years. There are 300 different breeds and 924 million goats in total, that can be found all over the world today (they can survive in all areas that provide plenty of food). Besides on the farms, domestic goat can be also found in the wild
GOBY – KAYA BALIĞI
Goby is type of fish. There are more than 2.000 species of goby that can be found in marine, brackish and fresh waters around the world. Most gobies inhabit shallow coastal areas, tropical reefs, estuaries and mangrove swamps. Round goby, monkey goby, toad goby and grass goby are commercially important types of goby that are used in human diet. Some marine gobies are popular and often kept in the aquariums as house pets.
GOLDFINCH – SAKA KUŞU
Finches are small Sparrow sized birds, the Goldfinch is around 12cm in length, making it smaller than Chaffinch. The Goldfinch is quite a striking little bird, full of colour and always calling. Tail is black with white side patches and trailing edge, rump is white, back is chestnut and wings are black with a large yellow wingbar and white tertial spots. The Goldfinch has a black and white head with a crimson red face. Nape and crown, black. Cheeks and throat are white. Face and chin is red.
GOOSE – KAZ
Goose is domesticated type of waterfowl. There are dozens of types of domestic geese today. They are all descendants of two basic types of geese domesticated 4.000 years ago. Greylag goose is an ancestor of domestic goose created in Europe, Africa and western Asia, while Chinese goose (second type of domestic goose), created in eastern Asia, originates from swan goose. Based on their weight, all types of geese are divided in three basic categories: heavy, medium and light. Geese can be found all over the world today. They are kept as a source of meat, eggs and feathers, or in some cases as house pets.
GOPHER – SİNCAP
Gopher is small rodent that belongs to the family Geomyidae. There are 35 species of gopher that can be found in the North and Central America. Gopher inhabits woodlands, prairies, coastal areas and mountains. It prefers areas with soft, moist soil. Gopher is classified as pest in rural and urban areas because it produces significant damage in the gardens, fields, dams and banks. Most species of gopher are numerous and widespread in their native habitats. Desert pocket gopher occupies small, restricted area in the wild and its future is uncertain due to habitat loss.
GORILLA – GORİL
Gorilla is the largest primate and the second closest relative (after chimpanzees) of humans. There are three subspecies of gorilla: Western Lowland, Eastern Lowland and Mountain gorillas. As their names suggest, these animals inhabit different parts of Africa and different types of habitat. Gorillas are critically endangered species. Their number in the wild decreased drastically in the previous century as a result of habitat loss, hunting, pet and zoo trade and diseases.
GRASSHOPPER – ÇEKİRGE
Grasshopper is an insect that belongs to the order Orthoptera. There are over 11 000 species of grasshoppers that can be found worldwide. They can survive in different climates and in numerous habitats. Grasshoppers can be found in the temperate forests, tropical rainforests, meadows, areas near the ponds and streams, rocky areas and even deserts. Grasshoppers are symbols of luck in Japan. Certain species of grasshoppers are endangered due to habitat loss
GUINEA PIG – GİNE DOMUZU
Guinea pig, also known as cavy, is domesticated species of rodent that belongs to the cavy family. It originates from Andes in South America. Guinea pig has been domesticated 5000 years ago by various South American tribes which had used it as a source of food, in medical purposes, as a gift for other tribes and for the various religious and ceremonial rituals. Guinea pig was brought to Europe by Spanish sailors in the 15th century. It instantly became popular as a house pets because of its docile nature and responsiveness for feeding. Aside as a pet, guinea pig was often used as model organism during the 19th century for studying nutrition, genetic and diseases such as tuberculosis, scurvy and diabetes. Guinea pig is mostly kept as a house pet today. It is numerous and widespread around the world, but it cannot be found in the wild anymore.
GUPPY – LEPİSTES
Guppy is tropical freshwater fish. It is native to South America. Guppy can be found in the slow-flowing rivers, small streams, lakes, ponds and pools and occasionally in the brackish waters. Guppy is one of the most popular aquarium fish because of its beautifully colored body, low requirements, ability to reproduce quickly and live side by side with many different types of fish. Aside as a pet, guppy is also frequently used for different experiments in the fields of ecology, behavior and evolution.
